Whether it’s white, red, rosé, dessert or sparkling wines you are after, the annual Mercury Wine Week provides the ideal opportunity to find a new treasure for the cellar. Wandering around the glittering marquee, it’s difficult to know where to start, so we just dived straight in.
From KWV’s easy-drinking Sauvignon Blanc 2011, packed with delicious pear flavours and priced at a wallet-friendly R41, to the more complex Wedderwill Sauvignon Blanc, produced using biodynamic principles, there’s something for everyone. Red wine-lovers shouldn’t feel left out either. One of my favourites was Constantia Glen Red Blend 3, an approachable blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with rich and fresh fruit flavours.
Since 1979, Mercury Wine Week has provided Durban and KwaZulu-Natal with the platform from which to host the country’s leading wine producers, estates and players while thrilling and challenging young or experienced wine lovers to the nuances of new releases and old favourites, with many different talking points.
As the highlight of the KwaZulu-Natal wine calendar, The Mercury Wine Week brings together around 140 delicatessen food and wine exhibitors and over 900 under the African skies. Wine lovers have a magnificent display from old favourites like Nederburg and Backsberg – two wineries that have supported the event since inception – to undiscovered treasures in the boutiques wineries not typically offered local exposure.
This makes it the largest selection of Cape wines under one roof and the opportunity to question the winemakers and producers who personally dedicate their time to present their wines. This year’s event includes a Friday night to ensure everyone has the chance to experience KZN’s premier wine event.
