Three men who were suspected of murdering Pinetown crime intelligence officer Captain Mervin Reddy on Friday were killed this morning in a shoot-out with police in Umlazi.
Acting on a tip-off, the police knocked on the door of a shack in J-section, Umlazi. When there was no reply, the police forced their way into the shack and a shoot-out followed, killing Xolani Ngcobo (25), Simphiwe Ngcobo (26) and Moyo Shozi.
The three were believed to have been responsible for the murder of Captain Mervin Reddy, who was shot dead as he reversed out of his driveway in Newlands West on Friday morning.
Capt. Reddy’s car, police issue firearm and his cell phone were taken from him in the attack.
Three firearms were recovered from the three suspects, and two cell phones that had been stolen from a police officer were also recovered. Capt. Reddy’s car had been recovered earlier in Lindelani.
A fourth man was taken in for questioning, but was later released.
However, the three suspects were not only directly linked to the killing of a policeman, they were also identified as well known hijackers in the greater Durban area.
