This year’s Comrades Marathon had all the drama and athleticism it’s famous for. For those of us watching from the sidelines, it’s an inspirational event. A few local companies took it one step further, making sure the runners were cared for…
BDO and Hirsch’s manned their own refreshment stands in Botha’s Hill – providing sustenance and a helping hand to the athletes as they continued along the second half of the ultramarathon route.
Sunil Shah from Hirsch’s in Hillcrest and Jocelyn Dabi from Hirsch’s in Pietermaritzburg ran the race and had plenty of support from their colleagues.
“Once again, it was fantastic to see the comradeship amongst the runners as they passed us,” said Sarah Brauns, PRO from Hirsch’s Hillcrest. “I had the most amazing experience when a blind runner grabbed my arm and asked me to help him get water and some Vaseline, and then carried on running. When I asked him how he was managing he simply said, ‘I listen to the runners’ feet’. How brave!”
